For most families, Christmas ends right after the festive dinner plates are cleared and the table is wiped clean. But in our home, this is when the real Christmas celebration truly begins.
As soon as the last bite of Christmas feast is finished, someone will speak the magical words we’ve looked forward to all year long: “Clear the table. Let’s bring out the mahjong.”
We stack the leftover dishes neatly on the kitchen counter and wipe the dining table twice until it’s spotless. Then one of us fetches the mahjong box from the top shelf. The crisp, rhythmic clack of mahjong tiles colliding with one another is our family’s official holiday signal—far more heartfelt than any festive bell or carol.
The world outside is cold, dark, and quiet on Christmas night. Inside our home, warm lights glow softly, the Christmas tree twinkles with colorful lights, and mugs of steaming hot tea, sweet cocoa, and spiced mulled wine sit steadily on the table corners. Kids run around the room with spare mahjong tiles in their hands, playing pretend games and filling the house with childish laughter. Four adults take seats around the table one by one, and the room settles into a gentle, peaceful atmosphere unique to our family gatherings.
It is never a dead silence, but a cozy, comforting hum of life.
We hear the soft shuffle of tiles sliding across the wooden table, light laughter when someone draws an unlucky tile, and playful groans when a family member wins the round. There are gentle, familiar banters all night long: “Wait, is it my turn already?” and the usual reply, “You say that every single time.”
Mahjong is a slow-paced game, and that’s exactly why we love it.
This leisurely game gifts us precious uninterrupted family time. We don’t need to force endless small talk to fill every minute. Instead, we chat casually about the little moments and big changes of the past year, tease each other about silly daily trivialities, and fondly recall beloved family members who once joined our Christmas mahjong nights and occupied the empty seat beside us. We sneak in extra Christmas cookies even after claiming we were full from dinner, and most importantly, we completely forget to scroll through our phones.
No one is in a hurry. No one has urgent plans or places to rush to. The game pauses freely for an extra slice of Christmas pie, for a nostalgic life story, for a waking baby needing comfort, for a new photo to share with the family, or simply to add another log to the warm fireplace.
Whenever we’re ready, we return to the table, and the mahjong tiles wait patiently for us, just like our family bond—steady and unwavering.
To me, this is the true meaning of Christmas.
It is not about fancy wrapped gifts, nor a perfectly polished holiday dinner. It is the warm lit table, the twinkling festive lights, the company of beloved family, and the soothing sound of shuffling mahjong tiles, like a soft, warm winter rain falling gently on our hearts.
Every family has its own unique Christmas tradition. Some love playing card games, others enjoy classic board games, and many stick to watching their favorite holiday movie on repeat every Christmas. Our family chooses mahjong.
This tradition has never been about winning or losing a game. It never has been.
It is about gathering around a table with the people we love most, slowing down from the fast pace of life, and letting the noise of the outside world fade away. It is about cherishing simple togetherness—the very core and purpose of every holiday celebration.
Now, every time December rolls around, our family never asks, “What should we do after Christmas dinner?”
There is only one warm, anticipated question floating in our home: “Who’s joining the mahjong game tonight?”
And without fail, there is always someone ready to say yes.
