Custom American Mahjong Sets, Built to Your Brief

Last updated: October 25, 2026

SO MAHJ makes custom American mahjong sets for individuals marking an occasion, for clubs and tournaments, and for retailers who want a private-label line. Tile artwork, Jokers and flowers, racks, gift boxes and engraving can all be customized. Email [email protected] with the quantity, the idea and your deadline to start; you get a written quote before anything is made.

What You Can Customize

Our retail line is the starting point, not a fixed menu. It lists 45 products from $0.90 to $350, including 27 American mahjong tile sets — 160 tiles each, in 3- to 5-layer laminated acrylic and solid acrylic — plus mats, racks, bags, boxes and cards. Custom work begins either from one of those designs or from artwork you supply. Three things get customized most often.

1. Tile-Face Artwork and Color

The tile face is where most projects start. Options include your logo or artwork printed across the set, a color palette carried through the backs and edges, a custom font on the number tiles, and original artwork for the dragons and winds. On the 4- and 5-layer builds the print is sealed inside the laminated acrylic, so the color sits under the surface instead of on top of it; custom mahjong tiles are built the same way. Our Crystal Luxe set lists a 1.42 × 1 × 0.43 inch tile face; mini-set faces are smaller still. That is a small canvas: thin lines and fine type fill in, and screen colors shift slightly in print. We check both at the artwork stage rather than after production. The print method and color match are confirmed in your quote.

What we need from you: production-ready artwork or a clear reference, color codes or a physical sample to match, and a decision on scope — a logo on the back tile costs less than a fully illustrated set. If you have no production files, our design team can build the artwork from your references; that work is quoted with the project.

2. Custom Joker and Flower Tiles

Jokers and flowers carry more personality per tile than anything else in the set. The official American count is 8 Jokers and 8 flowers. Our retail sets are listed at 160 tiles, with 10 Jokers and 6 blank spares on the sets that publish a breakdown, so there is a spare set of wild tiles in the box. Common requests are a custom Joker illustration, themed flower artwork, a name or date printed on the blanks, and replacement Jokers for a set that has lost one. Replacement Jokers can be printed as a standalone run when you do not need a whole set, though matching an existing set’s ink takes a physical sample or a clear photo.

What we need from you: which tiles, whether this is a new set or a replacement run, and a sample or photo of the set being matched. The run size and matching limits are confirmed in your quote.

3. Gift Boxes, Engraving and Packaging

Packaging turns a set into a present or into a retail product. We already ship a gift-boxed set: the Vintage Crane 160-tile set at $219 comes in its own gift box, and custom work extends that into full-color gift boxes, branded mailer boxes, insert foam, hang tags and printed instruction booklets. Engraving goes on racks; on tiles, personalization is printed rather than carved. For a personal gift, a name and date on a rack, a card or the box is usually enough. For retail, the box is part of the product and needs as much attention as the tiles.

What we need from you: your dielines and dimensions if you have them, or a reference box, plus artwork for every printed surface. Packaging tooling and timing are confirmed per project.

Who Custom Work Is For

Individuals and Gifts

Most personal projects have a date attached: a 60th birthday, a retirement, a wedding party, a memorial set for a player who has died. The brief is usually small and specific — a name, a year, a flower the person loved, a club color. One set is a legitimate order; say so in the first email. A personalized mahjong set is often ordered for exactly one table, which changes which parts are worth customizing. Custom cost per set is highest at quantity one, and it is better to know that before you approve artwork. When the budget is tighter than a full original design, the honest option is a smaller change on a stock set: a custom Joker, an engraved rack, a personalized box.

Clubs and Events

Clubs, leagues and tournaments order custom sets for two reasons: identity and prizes. A club logo on the Joker and the event year on the flower tiles produce a set members recognize across a room, and the same set works as a raffle or trophy item. The critical variable is the event date, not the design. Tell us the date in the first message and we will confirm whether the project fits before you spend time on artwork. Say whether sets ship to one address or several; shipping is quoted with the project.

Retailers and Wholesale

If you sell mahjong, or want to add a line, custom work is a private-label project. We design and produce our own 45-product line and offer OEM and private-label service, so wholesale mahjong sets can start from a design we already build or from yours. A retail project usually starts with three decisions: the price band, the number of designs, and who the customer is. From there we can propose a small starter range — one or two designs — instead of a full collection. The wholesale application form is the fastest route for retail buyers; email works too.

How a Custom Order Works

Five steps, in order, whether the project is one custom mahjong set or a retail run. Each step has a checkpoint you approve, and each step’s timing is confirmed in your quote rather than published as one number: a logo on an existing design and a new tile illustration are not the same job.

  1. Inquiry and quote. You send the quantity, what you want customized, the deadline and the ship-to country. We reply with a written quote covering price per set, minimum quantity, sample cost, production schedule and shipping. Nothing starts before you accept it.
  2. Design confirmation. You send artwork and references; we return a digital proof showing how the design sits on the actual tile face, with a color list. You approve the proof in writing. This is the stage to change your mind — changes after sample approval cost money.
  3. Sample. We produce a physical sample for you to handle: print clarity, color, tile weight, and how the Joker reads across a table. Sampling rounds and cost are per project. Sample approval locks the specification.
  4. Production. The run begins only after the approved sample. Tiles are checked during production and again before packing; packaging and labeling follow the approved spec. Your contact sends status updates through the run.
  5. Shipping. Custom orders do not use the 3–5 business day stock dispatch; the schedule in your quote replaces it. A standard 160-tile set weighs about 2.5 kg, so freight is a real line item and it is quoted with the project; there is no free-shipping threshold on custom orders. We ship by sea, air or courier depending on the deadline and budget, and provide tracking. Tell us at quote stage whether delivery goes to a warehouse or a home address.

Market Context: What the Numbers Say

Two figures are worth knowing, with two caveats: they describe the whole mahjong category rather than custom work, and they are third-party estimates, not our forecast. Verified Market Reports estimated the mahjong tiles market at $2.5 billion in 2024 and projected $4.5 billion by 2033, a 7.5% compound annual growth rate; those figures are republished in Alibaba.com’s 2026 Mahjong Export Playbook. The same 2026 playbook reports that US buyers make up 31.58% of global mahjong buyer volume on Alibaba.com, up 75.55% year over year.

The playbook also summarizes buyer feedback in the category: inconsistent quality, no size customization, and designs that assume an experienced player are the recurring complaints. Those are production problems, which is why every run here starts with an approved sample and a written specification. If a project cannot be made to the standard you approve, we would rather say so before the quote is signed than after the deposit.

FAQ: Custom Sets, Minimums and Returns

What is the minimum order quantity for a custom set?

There is no single number, because a name engraved on a rack and a full tile illustration are different jobs. Minimums depend on the design, material and packaging, and they are confirmed in your quote; the quote is the authority. If you know your quantity, send it and we will tell you whether it works. Stock-design wholesale orders do not carry a custom minimum.

Do I see a sample before production?

Yes. No production run starts before you approve a physical sample. You can check print clarity, color, tile weight and how the finished set reads on a table. Sample cost and the number of rounds are confirmed in the quote, because a new illustration and a printed logo need different amounts of work.

What artwork files do you accept?

Vector files — PDF, AI, EPS or SVG — are the safest for print. If you only have an image, send it at 300 dpi or better at final tile size. Set fonts to outlines and list color references for anything that must match. If you have no production files, we can build them from your references, quoted with the project.

How long does a custom order take?

It depends on the design, the sample rounds and the packaging, so the timeline is confirmed in your quote. As a general industry reference rather than a promise, custom tile production is measured in weeks, not days. Stock orders ship in 3–5 business days and take about 15 business days in transit. If your date is fixed, send it first — it decides whether the project is realistic.

How and when do I pay?

Terms are set out on the quote and invoice: the deposit and balance schedule, the currency and the accepted method. Ask for them with the quote. We do not collect payment before the specification and price are agreed in writing.

Can I return a custom set?

No. Custom and personalized items are non-refundable except for manufacturing defects, under our Return & Refund Policy — which is exactly why the sample step exists. Stock items can be returned within 15 calendar days of purchase, unused and in original packaging. If a delivery arrives damaged, contact us within 5 calendar days of delivery with photos and your order number.

Start a Custom Project

Email [email protected] or use the wholesale application form. Include five things: the quantity you have in mind, what you want customized, where the artwork stands, the date you need it, and the country it ships to. If you have a budget, include it — it changes which options we propose.

A custom mahjong set is quoted per project rather than listed at a fixed price, because quantity, artwork, material and packaging move the number too far for a catalog price to be honest. Stock sets ship in 3–5 business days and take about 15 business days in transit; custom work adds design, sample and production time on top. If your date is fixed, tell us first.
